Every room in the hotel is individually decorated, one of them by internationally-renowned design collective, Magpie Collective. Aside from the eye-catching interiors and artworks, much of it for sale, the art of winemaking is celebrated with a very good wine list.
The executive chef and his culinary team have an extensive a la carte menu containing excellent regional Karoo and other South African dishes. The restaurant has been awarded the Best Country-style Restaurant in the Western Cape for 2019/20!
This prestigious award was made by Eat Out -the authoritative guide to the top restaurants in South Africa, the closest SA has to Michelin star awards.
Food is art!
All dishes reflect the ethos of the Chaîne des Rộtisseurs, the international gastronomical guild dedicated to the camaraderie of the table, of which the hotel is a member. Most of our dishes are typical to the Karoo, South African klein dorpies (villages) and Karoo farmsteads —presented with flair.
Excellent food goes with excellent wine: The hotel’s superb wine list – with a special focus on the best Klein Karoo wines – received the prestigious Diamond class award – for the 4th year! – scooping up the coveted 2019/20 Diners Club Wine List Award. Only 40 establishments in South Africa – of which only 16 are from the Western Cape – received this prestigious wine list award.

Our Rooms
Take your pick from 15 en suite rooms, all completely individual in character but offering classic Karoo accommodation with a creative twist. Whichever room you choose you get the extra luxuries that count: top quality mattresses, soft percale linen, piping hot showers.
With the exception of the Garden Suite, all rooms are located on the first floor, some with views from balconies overlooking the village or garden. Note that access to this floor is by staircase – the only lift in the village of Barrydale is the one you’ll experience in spirit!
Klein Karoo Accommodation en suite:
We have 8 Klein Karoo rooms, each with its own individual style and décor. Two rooms have a bath tub with overhead showers, the rest offer showers only. Bed sizes and configuration varies from room to room; none have TVs.
Groot Karoo Accommodation en suite:
We have 6 Groot Karoo rooms. These are far more spacious rooms than the Klein Karoo rooms and have extra comforts such as flat screen TV’s with selected DSTV channels. All are furnished with king size-beds that can be made up as twins if preferred. Three are shower only whilst two have a classic Victorian bath plus shower.
Some have private balconies with lovely views over Barrydale.
Garden Suite with courtyard:
The Garden Suite is both the most spacious and most modern room in the hotel: a cool and uncluttered space, with glass doors that lead out to your private courtyard, with pond and shaded seating area. The room is fitted with an extra-length king size bed.
Perfect for guests looking for real privacy and space for reading and relaxation.
Special feature: two ooh-la-la his and hers outside showers! (the bathroom of course is also equipped with a shower.)
Our Facilities
Swimming Pool and Garden
Take a break from your day’s activities exploring the beauty of the Klein Karoo and spend some time relaxing at the large Karoo Art Hotel swimming pool – an absolute boon in the summer. After your dip; enjoy the gardens; sip on a cocktail; read a book; gaze at the huge blue sky.
The loungers provide guests with the perfect place to relax.
The Belanti Theatre and Bioscope
Aside from the bar, where most of our smaller events are hosted, the on-site Belanti Theatre and Bioscope is the hotel’s main venue. This space is used for private functions such as weddings, anniversary and birthday parties, and leads out into the hotel’s gardens.
Massage and Treatment Services
We have a small massage room at the hotel. We are happy to book one of the private masseurs in town to render massage services for our guests at the hotel.

Our restaurant, The Gallery, is proof that our love for all art and talented artists extends and embraces the kitchen! Over the last four years Karoo Art Hotel has established itself as a country hotel offering excellent food
